John B. Cannie joined Whiteman Osterman & Hanna LLP in November 2024. Mr. Cannie joins the firm after serving as an Associate at Snyder, Kiley, Toohey, Corbett & Cox LLP in Saratoga Springs, New York for five years. He previously served for five years an Associate at Carter Conboy in Albany and Saratoga Springs, New York. John concentrates his practice on real estate development, zoning, and land use as well as real estate transactional work. 

He has represented clients in residential, commercial, and public benefit developments, from the contract negotiation phase, through governmental approvals and finally closing on the transactions. 

John also represents clients in negotiation, drafting and enforcement of commercial lease agreements. 

Representative Accomplishments
  • Assists clients with all aspects of the land use permitting process, including the State Environmental Quality Review Act, and regularly appear before municipal land use boards.
  • Negotiation and drafting of commercial leasing, acquisition, and conveyance agreements in connection with commercial office space, mixed use developments and retail properties.
  • Represented the largest direct to consumer, on-premise brewery in the United States with respect to all legal aspects of the development of their new Saratoga Springs brewery location – including land use board approvals and closing on the real estate transaction.
  • Represented multiple landowners in the development of multi-use recreational trail systems in Saratoga County, including land use board approvals, negotiation of conservation easements, development of trail management plans and coordination of real property transfer to municipal ownership. 
Affiliations

John is admitted to practice in the State of New York. John is also a member of the New York State Bar Association and the Saratoga County Bar Association, where he serves on the Board of Directors.

Professional/Community

John serves as President of the Board of Directors of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, Inc. – a 501© (3) charitable foundation headquartered in Saratoga Springs, New York with retirement farms located in 15 states.

Background/Education

Originally from Vermont, John received his Juris Doctor from the University of Kentucky College of Law in 2014. He also received a Bachelor of Arts in Politics from Bates College in 2011. 

John resides in Saratoga Springs, with his wife and young son.
