John P. Calareso, Jr.
Partner

John Calareso is a  partner in Whiteman Osterman & Hanna’s Litigation, Arbitration and Mediation and Health Care Practice Groups. His primary practice area is federal and state civil litigation. Prior to joining the Firm in 2001, Mr. Calareso worked as an Assistant Corporation Counsel with the Office of the Corporation Counsel for the City of New York.

Representative Accomplishments

  • Successfully represented clients ranging from FORTUNE 500 companies and small businesses to individuals and not-for-profit corporations in a diverse array of litigation matters at trial and appellate levels in state and federal court.
  • Successfully represented multinational corporate client at trial level and on appeal in a judicial proceeding seeking to prevent development of real property alleging SEQRA violations.
  • Successfully defended multiple school districts and municipalities against lawsuits alleging that their actions violated individual or group constitutional rights including negotiation of complex settlements, summary judgments, and successful defense of appeals.
  • Successfully defended the City of New York and its departments and agencies in all stages of trial including preparation for trial, witness preparation, settlement conferences, and trial in cases involving allegations of negligence by the City.
  • Successfully defended the United States Marshals Service in employment discrimination hearings and worked with United States Attorneys Offices, United States Marshals, federal agencies, federal law enforcement officers, and private counsel to prepare for civil litigation and to prepare legislative proposals.

Affiliations and Bar Admissions
Mr. Calareso is admitted to practice law in the State of New York, as well as in the United States District Courts for all of the districts in New York, and the United States Supreme Court. He is a member of the New York State Bar Association and the American Bar Association. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region.

Background
Mr. Calareso is a graduate of The Columbus School of Law at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., where he was an editor on the Catholic University Law Review and a member of the Moot Court Association. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts in political science from The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts.
