Carrie E. Gee
Associate

Carrie E. Gee is an associate in the education and labor and employment practices of Whiteman Osterman & Hanna. Her areas of expertise include education law, charter schools, college and university compliance and copyright issues. Ms. Gee joined the Firm as an associate attorney in April of 2007.

Prior to joining the Firm, Ms. Gee was an associate at Hinman Straub PC in Albany, New York and Ingerman Smith in Northport, New York, concentrating in the area of education law. While attending law school, Ms. Gee interned at Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts in New York. Since graduating from law school, Ms. Gee has concentrated solely on the area of education law at the elementary, secondary and higher education levels.

Representative Accomplishments in Labor, Employment, and Education

  • Advised school districts on education law issues including residency of students, teacher certification, use of teacher aides and teacher’s assistants, homeless students, special education, student records, and teacher and student discipline;
  • Advised charter schools on education law issues including applications, renewals, authorizer compliance, labor, special education and student discipline;
  • Conducted audits of charter schools on special education compliance;
  • Conducted investigations and drafted reports regarding allegations of harassment, bullying, and inappropriate conduct by students and teachers;
  • Conducted comprehensive review and amendment of school districts’ policies and procedures;
  • Negotiation of collective bargaining agreements, and;
  • Representation of school districts on all manner of school and employment law matters.

Affiliations
Ms. Gee is a member of the American Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, the Albany County Bar Association, and a former member of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, where she served on the Entertainment Law Committee (2002-2006).

Background
Ms. Gee earned her Juris Doctor degree from Hofstra University School of Law. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Theater from Colgate University.

Recent Presentations and Publications
Ms. Gee has lectured on education law issues, including fiscal controls, cyber-bullying, charter school compliance, special education, student discipline, homeless students, student residency, copyright and constitutional issues affecting public, private and charter schools in New York. In addition, Ms. Gee has lectured on audits of the New York State Tuition Assistance Program for colleges and universities.

Community Involvement
Ms. Gee currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the Capital Repertory Theater and the Empire State Youth Orchestra. Ms. Gee is also an alumni representative for her alma matar Colgate University.
